What is a Slot?
A slot is a small area between the tips of the primaries of certain birds that helps to maintain a consistent flow of air over the wings during flight. In ornithology, a slot is also known as a slat. In computer science, a slot is an operation issue and data path machinery surrounding a set of one or more execution units (also called functional units). In very long instruction word (VLIW) computers, the term “slot” often refers to the relationship between operations in a pipeline and the corresponding pipeline stages that execute them.
